Armenian cuisine is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest in the South Caucasus. The dishes here are diverse and delicious thanks to the use of lots of spices, herbs, and wild flowers.
Armenians love their bread. You’ll rarely find an Armenian family gathering around the table without bread. Whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner, you have to have bread on your plate! A tonir, an underground oven, is used to make a particular kind of flatbread called Lavash( UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014). The country’s signature Ararat brandy and wine, along with its delicious fruit and bread, make Armenia a paradise for food lovers.
Wine making was developed in Armenia about 6000 years ago which prove the excavations in Areni cave. In the cave which is also known as “Bird’s cave” big wine jars were found.
One of the most interesting artefacts found in the cave is a shoe which was announced the oldest shoe in the world (5500 years old) made of leather after the expertise. To see the shoe one can visit History Museum of Armenia in the center of Yerevan.
Did you know that there is a capital older than Rome Yerevan, the beautiful "rose-colored" capital of the Republic of Armenia is reputedly one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities founded in 782 BC.
Yerevan is 29 years older than Rome and has about the same age as Babylon, Nineveh and Persepolis, but unlike them it has become one of prosperous cities of the 21st century.
